The Rent Well attendance policy is designed to balance student success with the busy schedules and day-to-day demands of those stepping into Rent Well instructor roles beyond their regular job duties. While consistent attendance is strongly encouraged, the Rent Well Program recognizes that students may occasionally experience significant life circumstances that interfere with their ability to attend their instructor-led classes.
Under the standard attendance policy:
- Students who miss the 1st section must be dropped from the class roster.
- Students may miss and make up a total of 2 sections of the course and still graduate with the rest of the class.
- Students who miss a 3rd or 4th section of the course may, at their instructor’s discretion, request an exception to the attendance policy from the Rent Well program via their instructor. If approved, the additional sections must also be completed to graduate.
- If more than 4 sections are missed, the student may continue the course at the instructor's discretion, but they will not receive a graduation certificate. They will need to retake the course from the beginning to potentially earn a certificate.
- Missing more than 15 minutes of a section counts as an absence for that section.
An instructor may reach out to the Rent Well program to request a waiver of the standard attendance policy on a case-by-case basis for students experiencing reasonable/verifiable life circumstances, including but not limited to medical issues, court obligations, emergencies, or health conditions. The Rent Well program still retains the right to deny the waiver request.
In these situations, a student may be permitted to miss and make up a total of up to 4 sections, provided all make up work is completed within 10 business days of the course completion date, and the instructor receives approval or guidance from the Rent Well Program.
Make up sections may be completed through:
- Instructor-led make up classes, either as a group or one-on-one review sessions, or
- Completion of assigned sections within the Rent Well eCourse.
If an instructor and student agree to complete the missed sections through the eCourse, the instructor must register the student through the eCourse Make Up Registration form (English) (Spanish) as soon as the student confirms they intend to continue participating in the course. The student will then receive access only to the assigned make up sections for a period of 2 weeks from the registration date. It is still the instructor's responsibility to ensure that all assignments, housing portfolio documents, and tenant education sample screens are completed by the student.
If the student does not complete the assigned sections within the two-week access period, the Rent Well team will notify the instructor. At that point, the remaining make-up work may still be completed through instructor-led make-up classes, depending on the instructor and scheduling capacity.
If the student later misses additional sections after already utilizing the initial make up process, the instructor may contact the Rent Well program to request an additional attendance exception. In these cases, the instructor must notify the Rent Well team of the missed sections on the same day the absence occurs so the student’s existing eCourse make-up account can be updated appropriately. The Rent Well team may then add the newly missed sections and extend access for an additional two weeks from the date of the most recent absence.
All approved make up work must be documented by the instructor and completed before a graduation certificate may be issued, no later than 10 business days from the original instructor-led graduation date. Final approval of attendance exceptions of a 3rd and/or 4th section of the course remains at the discretion of the Rent Well Program.
