Many local cities and counties have code enforcement teams that will come to your home and do an inspection. They are looking at if the building is up to code or safe for you to live there. You can search your local town/city or county's website to find the numbers for the Code Enforcement Department near you. You can also utilize the website to locate the building department in your city/town or county.
It is important to know that if the code inspector decides that your home is unsafe to live in, you immediately have to leave the unit. Have a Plan B for where you might go to stay if you are no longer allowed in your home due to safety reasons.
